For any M2M application that requires a resilient, high speed 3G or 4G mobile broadband connection, the Proroute GEM420 is the answer. Using single SIM or Dual SIM cards, the embedded 4G module will provide a high speed 4G connection or will also work with 3G services if 4G is unavailable. It has all the usual keep alive features to ensure that the router stays connected or if the connection is dropped by the network then the router will re-connect to ensure a reliable connection.
As a dual-sim 4G router, the GEM420 can also switch to a backup SIM card in the event that the primary network is unavailable and also features WAN option for connection to alternative internet service and can utilise both the WAN and 3G/4G connection at the same time. It also features a USB connection that can be used with a 3G/4G USB modem to provide yet another connection option and this can also be used at the same time as the embedded 4G module – the Proroute GEM420 provides basic load balancing between these multiple WAN connections.

As well as built-in keep-alive features including Ping Reboot / Cell ICMP check, the proroute GEM420 has the added benefit of a second SIM card slot so the router can be configured to switch over to a different 3G/4G network in the event that the primary 3G service becomes unavailable.

The GEM420 has SMS control features that enable the user to remotely manage some of the features for example using an SMS command to reboot the router or retrieve the router status.
EVERYTHING YOU NEED
The GEM420 is supplied with a UK mains power adapter, dual antennas for both the Cellular and WiFi connections and wall or DIN rail mounting brackets to suit most installation requirements.
4G LOAD BALANCING
The GEM420 supports basic load balancing for multiple WAN connections. For example, the router can use the embedded 4G module AND also use a second 3G/4G USB modem plugged into the USB port of the router and utilise both of these connections at the same time and provide load balancing on the LAN. This load balancing option is NOT providing 4G bonding, but does enable the user to utilise both connections.
FUTURE PROOFED AND BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE
The GEM420 provides the user with the latest 4G embedded technology as well as high speed CPU and already includes advanced firmware which will be upgrade-able in the future with new options and additions as they are added and of course is backwards compatible with 3G and 2G networks so will work in locations that don’t yet benefit from high speed 4G mobile broadband.

GEM420 GET CONNECTED GUIDE
This short video will run through setting up your router APN settings and your network management (Ping Reboot) and makes some suggestions as to why your router does not connect such as incorrect network monitoring settings or SIM / APN settings.
HOW DO I ENABLE REMOTE ADMINISTRATION FOR MY GEM420 4G ROUTER?
For security reasons the default setting of the proroute GEM420 4G Router is to enable Ping from the WAN but to disable remote administraton. The following video shows how to configure the router to enable remote admin and also how to restrict remote management.

This video explains how you can configure the GEM420 4G router to fail over to a second network SIM card in the event that the primary network connection becomes unavailable. This SIM failover feature provides extra resilience, especially useful for M2M applications where the router is located at a remote installation. This video also shows how to manually select whether to use SIM A or SIM B so you can manually choose which network to use.
WILL THE PROROUTE GEM420 4G ROUTER WORK WITH A 3G SIM / 3G NETWORK?
YES – the GEM420 4G Router will quite happily work with a 3G SIM card and use a 3G network to provide reliable 3G M2M connectivity. You can see in the video below a demonstration of the GEM420 using a 3G Vodafone SIM and also a 3G Speed Test using the 3G network.

HOW DO I CONFIGURE MY GEM420 4G ROUTER TO WORK IN 4G FAILOVER MODE?
In the following video we show you the configuration example where the GEM420 router uses the Ethernet WAN Interface as the primary internet connection and fails over to the embedded 4G module when this WAN connection is lost. In this example we have set the GEM420 to use seamless failover which means that the 3G/4G module is connected in readyness so that it can provide internet connection straight away in the event that the WAN Ethernet internet connection is lost. The GEM420 can also be set to failover from 4G to the WAN Ethernet Internet connection and this is also explained in the video.
HOW TO CONFIGURE THE GEM420 EMBEDDED 4G MODULE TO USE A SPECIFIC NETWORK TYPE EG. 2G, 3G OR 4G ONLY.
In some instances you may want the router to only use 2G, 3G or 4G connections and this video shows how to configure the router so the embedded 4G module will only use the selected network type. In Auto mode the router will use the fastest available network.
How do I connect the power to my GEM420 4G Router?
The red wire connects to PWR1 and the black wire connects to GND (next to PWR1)
Does the GEM420 4G Router Support Dynamic DNS (DyNDNS) For Remote Access?
Yes – the GEM420 4G Router supports DyNDNS, however not all 3G and 4G networks support the feature.
For example, in the UK none of the 4G networks will support DyN DNS becuase they will only give the 4G connection a private IP address on their network. Because the 4G Internet connection does not have a public IP address the IP address that the router will report to the DYNDNS service will be the private IP address eg:10.34.26.109, however the IP address at the point the 4G connection reaches the internet will be the mobile providers PUBLIC IP address which may be 188.8.131.52 and this will be the IP address shared by 200+ users so you could not use this public IP address to route to the private IP address on the mobile providers network.
Some 3G networks will provide the 3G connection with a PUBLIC IP address such as 3mobile (using APN 3internet) – however this is not a guaranteed service and subject to availability of IP addresses and of course 3mobile are not contractually obliged to continue to offer this service and it may stop at any time without notice or penalty.
You could of course use a Fixed IP SIM card or configure your GEM420 to create a site to site VPN back to a central office location which will enable you to connect to remote sites over the VPN.
